Travelling foreign lands in our car gives one a sense of freedom and exploration that’s impossible to by city breaking your way around Europe. Discover the parts of a country that are away from the bright lights and the hustle and bustle, getting to know the areas less abuzz with tourists. Some of my favourite kind of routes are those on the coast. There’s something about having the sea on one side and a beautiful landscape on the other that makes coastal driving so special. Discover some of the best car journeys on the European coastline with this list that will have you itching to get behind the wheel.
1. South of Iceland
Routes don’t get more spectacular than this. A journey through the south of Iceland is a journey through mountains, waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes, with more than a few vibrant villages on the way. While a roadtrip across this whole country is highly recommended, the southern part is the most picturesque.
2. Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland
Named after the famous landmark, the Giant’s Causeway, stepping out to scramble over the huge rocks is only a part of this magical route. On this route you’ll find ancient castles, cliff walks and whiskey distilleries, although it may be best to avoid that last one if you’re driving. For any Game of Thrones fans, Northern Ireland has been the setting for many of the show’s iconic scenes which can be seen on this route.
3. Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
The stretch of this coast between Split and Dubrovnik is a joy to drive, with the walls of Dubrovnik giving Game of Thrones fans another chance to relive some of their favourite moments from the show, notably, King’s Landing. Reaching Dubrovnik opens up a gateway to other European locations, which you may want to explore.
4. French Riviera, France
The French Riviera route is like nothing else on this list. Not only is it an incredible experience for the panoramic views of clear waters, beaches and historic places, but the wealth of the areas you pass through will astound you. St Tropez, Cannes and Monaco are places in which glamour is a part of everyday life and every car that you pass will be better than yours. Best to forget about the highways for this route, as you’ll be out of pocket thanks to the expensive tolls, but you’ll also miss out on some fantastic scenic views taking the normal roads.
